I doubt youre really finding out too much that way. Instrument speakers are a LOT heavier than car speakers. Gerry Not only that - the enclusures you design for the car speakers are not likely to be a good match for the new speakers you eventually replace them with. Youll need to build new cabinets for the new speakers based on the new thiel parameters to get any decent results - so the information you get in terms of size and weight from the experiment will be useless. There is a lot more that goes into building a speaker cabinet than just stuffing a speaker in a box.
Doug wrote: Im adding a pair of 6 by 9" speakers to my Nissan Pickup. There is no place to mount them in the truck, so I plan to build a box for them. The box will be hung or mounted to the back wall of the cab. My question is, do I need a port for such a settup? Obviously this will not be a really powerful system, Im not expecting too much, but I just want to make the box correctly to maximize the quality. I also want the box to be removable, since it will take up enough space to make the little seat in the back unusable, what do people recommend for a way to plug in speakers and unplug them (insulated plugs of some kind?) Thanks for any suggestions. They shouldnt need to be ported - 6x9s are typically designed to mount in an infinite-baffle setup, such as a cars rear deck. A big spacious box will work as well as anything.
Maybe Ill stick with car speakers then. I am interested in light and small so that would push me toward sealed enclosures and away from instrument speakers.
-- Epson 740i USB printer (still works) -- Logitech mouse/keyboard combo (havent used in years, as is) complete set. -- Altec Lansing speakers, AC powered -- 56K modem? I think... -- Keyboard, microphone, parallel cable, audio card cable, some other cables?? -- Any other computer related gear I will throw in... as I see...
- Should go with a sealed or ported enclosure? - For sealed enclosure, do I need to separate the woofer and the unsealed midrange/tweeter speaker? Im afraid the pressure from the bass would push the midrange cone around. - Is it more likely to damage the woofer in a ported enclosure? The amp and speakers have outlandish wattage specs I would be unlikely to take advantage of even if they were accurate but Im guessing a live bass would stress the speaker more than recorded music. Hmmm, let me ask a question of my own. What amp is this that will produce outlandish watts on a car battery?
